The term "Ayurveda" literally translates to "wisdom of life" or "science of life" and refers to a holistic system of medicine that has been practiced for over 5,000 years in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The term originates from the Indian Sanskrit language and is composed of the words Ayus (life) and Veda (knowledge).
Central elements of Ayurveda include:
- Massage and purification techniques
- Dietary principles
- Spiritual yoga practice
- Herbal medicine
The foundation of this ancient system of medicine is the doctrine of the five elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. In Ayurveda, these elements are summarized in the Tri-Dosha concept of the three bioenergies Vata, Pitta and Kapha. When the Doshas are in balance, a person is healthy. Furthermore, Ayurveda views and treats the human being holistically, as a physical, mental, and spiritual entity. |
